Finch Brook Preserve – Trail Report for March 2014

Having walked the entire trail on Sunday, March 2, I am pleased to report that the Finch Brook Trail has survived the winter of 2013-2014 quite well. There is still significant snow cover but I found it to be densely packed and consequently didn’t use my snowshoes. It should be ideal for all of you Nordic skiers, as well. The blue blazes make following the trail especially easy in the winter. At any time of year the Finch Brook Preserve is, of course, an incredibly peaceful and beautiful place to unwind, but the winter snow cover takes it to an even higher degree.

Our blue trail at Finch Brook Preserve lies beneath a densely-packed blanket of snow.

Unfortunately, we have had a problem this winter with illegal snowmobile activity in the preserve. Snowmobilers have crisscrossed the majority of the acreage with little regard to using obvious pathways, driving over and breaking a substantial number of saplings. They have driven their vehicles over the bog bridge as well, scraping the decking surfaces. A more thorough inspection of the bog bridge will be done in coming weeks after the snowpack has departed.

Saplings at Finch Brook Preserve have been snapped under the weight of snowmobiles. Motorized vehicles are explicitly forbidden at Finch Brook Preserve in order to maintain habitat and protect trails and bridges.
